Summary

The beloved author returns with a remarkable novel of both raw suspense and lyric beauty— the story of a lost pilot and a wartime photographer that will leave its mark on your soul。

In 1947, photographer and war correspondent Janey Everett arrives at a remote surfing village on the Hawaiian island of Kauai to research a planned biography of forgotten aviation pioneer Sam Mallory, who joined the loyalist forces in the Spanish Civil War and never returned。 Obsessed with Sam’s fate, Janey has tracked down Irene Lindquist, the owner of a local island-hopping airline, whom she believes might actually be the legendary Irene Foster, Mallory’s onetime student and flying partner。 Foster’s disappearance during a round-the-world flight in 1937 remains one of the world’s greatest unsolved mysteries。

At first, the flinty Mrs。 Lindquist denies any connection to Foster。 But Janey informs her that the wreck of Sam Mallory’s airplane has recently been discovered in a Spanish desert, and piece by piece, the details of Foster’s extraordinary life emerge: from the beginnings of her flying career in Southern California, to her complicated, passionate relationship with Mallory, to the collapse of her marriage to her aggressive career manager, the publishing scion George Morrow。

As Irene spins her tale to its searing conclusion, Janey’s past gathers its own power。 The duel between the two women takes a heartstopping turn。 To whom does Mallory rightfully belong? Can we ever come to terms with the loss of those we love, and the lives we might have lived?

Another great Beatrix Williams book。 She weaves a wonderful story about a female aviatrix in the 1930-40s who find passion in flying and in love, but also loss。

Beatriz dazzles again!! I am always amazed at her chameleon style, her ability to change her voice to match not only character but also the time period。 This book brought the early years of aviation to thrilling life。 Brava!

My first Beatriz Williams and definitely not my last! The narrative voice in this book was pitch perfect and I loved Williams's vulnerable, imperfect and slightly messy characters。 Throw in female pilots, a beautiful love story, a compelling dual narrative and you have a book that was hard to put down and one of my fave reads so far this year。 My first Beatriz Williams and definitely not my last! I picked up this book at the library on a whim。 It looked promising - women pilot, mysterious circumstances, historical fiction, and Kauai。 I had some initial problems with it - it was slow to start, the inhabitants and setting didn't have an authentic feel to me, and then I started having issues with some of the characterizations of the women。 But, the story telling was lyrical and beautiful, so I kept going - and I'm glad that I did。 It ended much more strongly than it had begun and it turned I picked up this book at the library on a whim。 It looked promising - women pilot, mysterious circumstances, historical fiction, and Kauai。 I had some initial problems with it - it was slow to start, the inhabitants and setting didn't have an authentic feel to me, and then I started having issues with some of the characterizations of the women。 But, the story telling was lyrical and beautiful, so I kept going - and I'm glad that I did。 It ended much more strongly than it had begun and it turned into a lovely tale about identity, connection, and truth。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book!! It was a very creative fictional twist on a historical mystery, that caught me off guard at times。

I love learning about something new when I read historical fiction。 With this book I learned about the early days of flight and female pilots。 I liked that there was a mystery in this book that was revealed in two different time lines。 It had me guessing until the end。

Jennifer

Started off slow but good story through the second half。 If you can keep going, you will not be disappointed by the author!

Lisa

This one took me a long time to get into; but it finally did hook me。

This was SO good! I loved it。 I love all of Beatriz Williams' books。 I definitely want to be a completist of her work。 Every time I read one of her historical fiction novels, I love the alternating chapters between different characters, places, and timelines。 Just fantastic!!! I wish that the author’s note was at the front of the book because I thought this was a veiled effort to explain Amelia Earhart’s life。 As the author’s note explains, she was reimagining circumstances and went down the “what if” rabbit hole。。。and out hopped this story。 Once I knew this I was able to enjoy it way more。 There were a few things I didn’t like but all in all a good story with unexpected (at least to me) twists。

Her Last Flight by Beatriz Williams is a compelling story that undoubtedly makes you think about Amelia Earhart。 The novel is filled with some great historical details as well as aviation details all the while keeping you flipping the pages about all the unanswered questions。 I think it's an interesting reimagining of Amelia's life and her disappearance。 Also, the details surrounding aviation were also really fascinating, and of course I loved the Hawaiian setting and other tropical settings as Her Last Flight by Beatriz Williams is a compelling story that undoubtedly makes you think about Amelia Earhart。 The novel is filled with some great historical details as well as aviation details all the while keeping you flipping the pages about all the unanswered questions。 I think it's an interesting reimagining of Amelia's life and her disappearance。 Also, the details surrounding aviation were also really fascinating, and of course I loved the Hawaiian setting and other tropical settings as well as the details regarding surfing。 。。。more

Oh, did I love this book so so much! It was fantastic, truly! What a great ride, with two feisty heroines。 And with Beatriz Williams, its' always sensual writing。 You can see the beauty, feel with your senses, hear the sounds。 The story kept me moving, until I had no choice just to put everything aside and read the second half in one day。 Really, a new favorite that has stayed with me。 Just loved it。 Oh, did I love this book so so much! Sometimes a book will just slowly take you in and curl around you like a comfy pillow。 I had no idea how sucked into this book I would be。 Ms。 Williams writes so precisely and smoothly。 I love her work and I love this story。 It takes you on a journey that has so many twists。 Truly wonderfully written with great characters, touching stories, and a witty yet snarky storyteller。 I cannot imagine anyone being disappointed with this one。

Loosely (as in a child’s tooth hanging on by a thread) based on the life and disappearance of Amelia Earhart, Williams weaves three storylines across as many decades from the 20s into the 40s, covering the rise of famed aviatrix Irene Foster, her relationship with pilot Sam Mallory, and her disappearance as the puzzle comes together by journalist Janey Everett。 Some of the parts just dragged on and should have been cut out, and as for being a work of historical fiction, this was one of her weake Loosely (as in a child’s tooth hanging on by a thread) based on the life and disappearance of Amelia Earhart, Williams weaves three storylines across as many decades from the 20s into the 40s, covering the rise of famed aviatrix Irene Foster, her relationship with pilot Sam Mallory, and her disappearance as the puzzle comes together by journalist Janey Everett。 Some of the parts just dragged on and should have been cut out, and as for being a work of historical fiction, this was one of her weaker stories that felt more like a family drama and weak romance novel with very little history to be gleaned from the pages。 There was a time when she was an auto-buy author for me and I swore after the last one I wouldn’t do it again, but it’s like I have book amnesia! Enough time passed and I felt pulled into trying another one of her novels, but this is one I’ll easily forget and could have been interesting if it had stuck to being more historically based。 。。。more

I have really come to enjoy Beatriz Williams books and Her Last Flight did not disappoint。 She writes historical fiction and does it well, intertwining the research with her story so that you are entertained as you learn。 Honestly, I put off reading this one a bit because I didn’t want to read a story of Amelia Earhart (I am partial to Beryl Markham if you are going to choose an aviatrix to like) but finally my affection for Ms Williams writing style made me sit down to read it。 And I really was I have really come to enjoy Beatriz Williams books and Her Last Flight did not disappoint。 She writes historical fiction and does it well, intertwining the research with her story so that you are entertained as you learn。 Honestly, I put off reading this one a bit because I didn’t want to read a story of Amelia Earhart (I am partial to Beryl Markham if you are going to choose an aviatrix to like) but finally my affection for Ms Williams writing style made me sit down to read it。 And I really was entertained and learned a lot。 And it isn’t really about Amelia Earhart anyway。 Enough said。 I recommend it。 。。。more
